Synopsis:

Director Gary Shore revamps the mythos surrounding Vlad the Impaler in Dracula Year Zero, a Universal Pictures release from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The horror tale is set to take place in Romania during the Turkish invasion as Vlad (Luke Evans) goes to the greatest of lengths to fight for his homeland -- even if it means selling his soul and becoming forever doomed as a creature of the night.

Review:

A Dracula movie for those who prefer a darkly romantic take on the character -- like Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 epic Bram Stoker's Dracula or the 2013 TV series Dracula starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers -- 2014's Dracula Untold is a period adventure with a fantastical, gothic-horror twist. Taking a cue from the aforementioned adaptations of the classic tale, Dracula Untold attempts to present the origin story of the powerful vampire, explaining why the Romanian prince once known as Vlad Dracul made a deal with dark forces that would transform him into the creature of the night that's now part of popular mythology: namely, that he did it all for his country and, of course, for love.

The story begins in the 15th century, as Prince Vlad (Luke Evans) rules his Eastern European country with a fair and steady hand. Although he's been known to decimate villages in the name of protecting his people, he's done so without bloodlust, making tough, kingly decisions like sacrificing ten people to save 100. Those decisions get a lot tougher, however, when a neighboring sultan demands that Vlad hand over 1000 Romanian boys to be trained as Turkish soldiers -- if he refuses, the sultan will launch a full, bloody invasion. Vlad just can't bring himself to do it, especially since it would mean losing his own son, so he seeks out supernatural assistance. Agreeing to a contract with a decrepit, ancient vampire, he is granted all of the monster's powers (intense speed, increased strength, and the ever-useful ability to turn into a flock of bats) and weaknesses (sunlight, pure silver, and wooden stakes), as well as the promise that he will turn back into his mortal, non-evil self if he can resist feeding on human blood for a period of three days. Vlad figures he just needs to defeat the Turks in that time, which he can surely accomplish via supernatural brute force and scaring the piss out of them with his powers, right?

Dracula Untold is fine Halloween entertainment, especially for those looking for something spooky but not necessarily terrifying. Compared to the average slasher movie, it keeps the gore level pretty low. And in a world of absurdly long action/adventure films, Dracula Untold's tight 92-minute run time makes it a solid popcorn flick. It has a certain B-movie flavor, despite being pretty tasteful overall -- at least for a vampire film.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, the second film based on author James Dashner's young-adult adventure series, picks up right where the first movie ended: Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and his fellow Gladers, having escaped from the deadly labyrinth of the first story, are taken via helicopter to a fortified WCKD (World Catastrophe Killzone Department) compound, where they are promised safety and a new life. But once inside, Thomas learns that WCKD is up to some very wicked things indeed. The shadowy organization, led by the mysterious Ava Paige (an underused Patricia Clarkson), want to drain their blood, since they are immune to a nasty virus called "the flare" that turns humans into zombie-like creatures known as "cranks." Paige's ultimate goal, or so she claims, is to find a cure for the flare, and she believes that Thomas in particular might be the key. But he doesn't want anything to do with her blood-sucking research, and persuades his friends to escape once again. When they do, they discover that the outside world is a barren, apocalyptic landscape that has been scorched by solar flares. The gang then spend the rest of the movie running from WCKD soldiers and fighting off terrorizing cranks -- along with an interlude in which they are captured by a mercenary leader (the always reliable Giancarlo Esposito) and must persuade him not to sell them back to WCKD -- as they attempt to reach a distant mountain safe haven where the Right Arm, a resistance group also working on a cure, are located.

And that's about it. Unfortunately, The Scorch Trials doesn't do much to advance its dystopian tale. It offers very little in the way of character development, answers zero questions about the flare and the deadly virus it spawned, and its plot ends up pretty much where it started. Worst of all, the story plays out in sluggish fashion, with long dry spells between the action set pieces (the best one takes place in an abandoned mall populated with menacing, fast-moving cranks). Its bloated running time (131 minutes) also doesn't help. Fortunately, O'Brien, who is in nearly every scene, is immensely watchable as Thomas. We always cheer for him and fear for him, although we know nothing bad is really going to happen to the movie's protagonist. Kaya Scodelario is equally good as Teresa, the lone female who escaped the maze. She is the one character we do get to know better, and her questionable actions propel the story into its next (and presumably) final installment, The Death Cure, in which Thomas plans to bring down WCKD and exact revenge on his persecutors.

The Scorch Trials isn't a disaster, but it is a disappointment. Director Wes Ball manages to stage a couple of impressive action scenes, but it's all to little effect. Sadly, the movie feels like a placeholder, and it suffers from the problem of many middle films in a trilogy: It isn't nearly as good as the original, and it serves as little more than a bridge to what one hopes is a rousing finale. Mostly, though, The Scorch Trials is just a trial to sit through.

Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) loves science and the promise of the future. She loves them so much that she's willing to sneak onto NASA property at night in order to sabotage the cranes dismantling a shuttle-launch platform. This endeavor eventually lands her in the slammer, and after being released on bail, she finds among her returned possessions a small enamel "T" pin that she swears isn't hers. It doesn't take long before she discovers that touching the pin immerses her in a vision of an ideal future, full of amber waves of grain and a metropolis that's like the Emerald City with monorails. The fervor of this hallucination leads her to the doorstep of Frank Walker (George Clooney), an embittered inventor who nevertheless believes what she saw. Why? Because when he was young, he saw it too -- and he knew what it was trying to tell him.

Since the theme-park-ride-turned-movie-franchise concept worked so lucratively for Pirates of the Caribbean, it's not surprising that Disney is now mining the rest of its amusement parks for inspiration. And considering the recent successes of space-themed properties like Guardians of the Galaxy (created by Marvel, now owned by Disney), Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear (Pixar, now Disney), and Star Wars (Lucasfilm, now Disney), Tomorrowland certainly makes more sense to green-light than, say, It's A Small World After All. Also in the film's favor: Director and co-writer Brad Bird (famous for The Iron Giant and The Incredibles) is a contrarian who prefers space-age optimism to our current love affair with dystopias. Bird excels at moments filled with awe and magical possibility, and the early scenes of a young Frank (Thomas Robinson) testing out his homemade jetpack will trigger the same kind of tingling glee people feel when they're flying in their dreams.

Unfortunately, Tomorrowland is also full of the unvarnished elitism critics found in The Incredibles: Its utopic vision is one populated exclusively by "exceptional people," who can devote all of their time to prototyping the world's problems away without having to bother with the petty and annoying rabble. This Übermensch philosophy, melded with Disney's blue-sky, pixie-dust cheerfulness, leads to the explicit message that simply dreaming of better things is enough of a start in the right direction -- a theory quickly disproven by the endless credits, which are filled with the names of hundreds of special-effects technicians who certainly did more than dream while hunched over their workstations. (And cynics will have a field day spotting all of the product placements, right down to a glucose-starved Casey guzzling down a recommended Coca-Cola -- the primary vendor of soda at Disney's theme parks -- as a cure for teleportation sickness.)

Tomorrowland does have one standout element, and that's the performance of young British actress Raffey Cassidy as Athena, a preternaturally poised 12-year-old first seen in a flashback at the 1964 World's Fair. Possessing steely-grey eyes, an enchanting spray of freckles, and the same precocious child-woman bearing as prodigies like Jodie Foster and Saoirse Ronan, she is the most fascinating part of a movie packed with explosions and martial-arts mayhem. Scenes between her and any of her co-stars -- including Clooney -- aren't even a fair fight, as her acute, austere grace quietly steals every scene she's in. Tomorrowland tries to fill our heads with theme-park visions of the future, but the only prognostication worth hoping for is a long and fruitful career for Cassidy.
